The second edition of the “Copa Embajada Argentina” (Argentine Embassy Cup) took place in Sotogrande, highlighting the continuing dominance of Argentine polo while fostering cultural and sporting bonds between Argentina and Spain.

 

Held on August 17 at Los Pinos del Ayala Polo Club, Cádiz-Spain, the event drew attention from local and international audiences, eager to see top-level polo competition alongside cultural demonstrations and festivities.

Argentina’s national team reaffirmed its supremacy with a 9-7 victory over Spain. This match demonstrated the depth of Argentine polo talent, featuring a refreshed lineup composed of Segundo Fernández Llorente, Ciro Urturi, Santiago Laborde, and Nicolás Tomasevich. Spain responded with Nicolás Ruiz Guiñazú, Martín Iturraspe, Gonzalo Entrecanales, and Luis Domecq, ensuring a competitive contest across five intense chukkers.

 

The match’s result continued Argentina’s undefeated streak in this tournament, having previously claimed victory in the inaugural edition with a commanding score of 14-8, featuring notable duos like Lorenzo and Pedro Chavanne and the late Rufino Laulhé. The consistency of Argentine teams emphasizes their standing as a formidable force in international polo.

The award ceremony underscored the event’s diplomatic significance, with Argentine Ambassador Wenceslao Bunge Saravia and La Martina CEO Adrián Simonetti present to honor the champions.

 

Spectators enjoyed a vibrant atmosphere marked by national pride, with flags raised and national anthems played. The presence of high-profile figures from the diplomatic, business, and sports circles added prestige to the event.

Benjamín Araya, president of the Argentine Polo Association, highlighted the importance of these competitions for Argentine polo’s international reputation. He noted that such events serve as a platform for showcasing the sport’s excellence and reinforcing Argentina’s status as a polo powerhouse.

 

Outside the playing field, the event celebrated Argentine culture through traditional elements like an asado (barbecue) accompanied by renowned Malbec wines and Quilmes beer. These offerings created a relaxed environment fostering interaction among players, officials, and cultural ambassadors.

The event’s success has sparked anticipation for a potential rematch, possibly during the upcoming Palermo Open in Buenos Aires—arguably the world’s most prestigious polo tournament. This future fixture could further intensify the rivalry and showcase the best in international polo.

 

In addition to the competitive matches, the event featured attractions such as Polo Rueda exhibitions by children from multiple countries. Live music, food trucks, and cultural activities contributed to an engaging and family-friendly atmosphere.
