American photographer Alec Soth brings a poetic realism to the forefront as he captures the mesmerizing and varied landscapes of China — from misty rivers to dramatic mountain backdrops.
In the first chapter of this three-part journey, Soth stages artifacts such as Monogram Horizon rolling suitcases, Soft Keepall bags, Alzer trunks, and Coffret designs amidst the mist-laden peaks and tranquil waters of Guilin’s Li River. His compositions transform luggage into spiritual symbols; in one striking image, a stack of cases — crowned by a parasol at sunset — forms a sculptural totem, as silent and evocative as a shrine.
