In a remarkable change within France’s elite circles of wealth, the Hermès family has overtaken Bernard Arnault to become the richest family in the country.

This development signals a major shift in the luxury market landscape and highlights Hermès’ impressive resilience despite global economic uncertainties.

As of the latest rankings, the Hermès family’s fortune stands at a staggering €163.4 billion, reflecting steady growth even in challenging times.

A Closer Look at Hermès' Growing Wealth

The Hermès family’s controlling stake of approximately two-thirds of the company’s shares (66.7%) gives them unparalleled influence in the luxury house’s operations and future direction.

Over the past year, Hermès has seen its valuation increase by 5%, a strong performance when compared to the broader luxury goods market, which experienced contraction.

Meanwhile, Bernard Arnault, the long-time titan of French wealth and the CEO of LVMH, saw his fortune decline significantly by nearly 39%, dropping his estimated net worth to €116.7 billion.

This decline marks a notable change after years of Arnault leading France’s rich list. It also emphasizes how market dynamics and strategic business decisions have impacted both luxury giants differently.

What Has Fueled Hermès’ Robust Growth?

Several strategic and market factors have contributed to Hermès’ continued success:

  • Consistent Revenue Growth: In 2024, Hermès posted a 15% rise in sales, reaching almost $16 billion. This growth starkly contrasts with the 2% decline seen across the luxury sector overall, showing Hermès’ strong market positioning.
  • Dividend Payouts Reflecting Financial Strength: The family benefited from a historic dividend payout totaling $5.5 billion, demonstrating the brand’s robust profitability and its ability to reward shareholders generously.
  • Strong Brand Identity and Exclusive Market Position: Hermès maintains an image synonymous with exclusivity and craftsmanship, resisting mass-market trends that other luxury brands have struggled with. This exclusivity is often backed by exceptional customer service and luxe amenities offered at boutiques and bespoke events, elevating the consumer experience.

  • Market Capitalization Milestone: In early 2025, Hermès briefly surpassed LVMH in market value, underscoring its strong investor confidence and the high demand for its timeless luxury goods.

Beyond the Product

Hermès isn’t just about luxury products; the brand provides an entire lifestyle steeped in prestige. The luxe style associated with Hermès extends beyond its signature handbags and scarves, reaching into the realm of personalized shopping experiences, VIP client events, and exclusive access to limited-edition collections.

Boutiques are meticulously designed to offer an intimate atmosphere where clientele can enjoy unparalleled service. Private appointments, customization options, and even private showings for VIP customers create an environment where luxury is defined by more than the merchandise—it is an immersive experience.
