Oheka Castle spanning over 109,000 square feet with 127 rooms, the French-style chateau—designed by Delano & Aldrich and nestled atop Long Island’s highest hill—is steeped in Gilded Age opulence.

Around the grounds, the famed Olmsted Brothers landscaping includes formal sunken gardens, reflecting pools, tennis courts, greenhouses, and even an 18-hole golf course—revealing the magnitude of its original vision.

After decades of diverse uses—from a military academy to a government facility—it fell into disrepair. In 1984, developer Gary Melius committed over $40 million to restore the estate to its original grandeur. Today, it operates as a luxury hotel and event venue. Guests enjoy luxe amenities such as in-room Molton Brown toiletries, Frette linens, in-room massage service, a 24-hour fitness center, and elegant Alacarte breakfasts in the grand ballroom—all reflecting a high-end experience rooted in historical charm.

Gold Coast Mansions: Beyond Oheka

Fitzgerald drew inspiration from multiple estates on the Gold Coast—real places that lent authenticity to West Egg and East Egg. Visitors can explore great houses like Hempstead House, Beacon Towers (now demolished but once the iconic inspiration), and Old Westbury Gardens. While some have vanished, the grandeur remains, allowing guests to experience luxe amenities such as curated historical tours, private event staff, manicured lawns, and vintage-era interiors.

Today’s tours highlight the lavish lifestyles of early 20th-century elites. From elite golf and tennis to chauffeur-driven mansion access and behind-the-scenes walkthroughs, these estates recreate the aura of luxe amenities and excess that once defined the Jazz Age.
