At just 21 years old, Carlos Alcaraz continues to build a legacy at an incredible pace, with this victory being his 19th overall on the ATP Tour. Winning on the historic clay courts of the Foro Italico only adds to his growing dominance on this surface.

Facing the home favorite Jannik Sinner in front of a wildly supportive Italian crowd, Alcaraz rose to the challenge with a composed and clinical performance. He secured the title with a 7-6(5), 6-1 triumph over the World No. 1, ending Sinner’s incredible 26-match unbeaten run in 2024. The win solidifies Alcaraz’s reputation as one of the most mentally and tactically mature players on tour.

“I’m thrilled to win my first title here in Rome—hopefully not the last,” Alcaraz said during the trophy ceremony. “It’s great to see Jannik back playing at such a high level after being away for so long. Reaching the final of a Masters 1000 in his return event is an incredible achievement, and he deserves a lot of credit.”

Victory in the eternal city

Reflecting on his own performance, Alcaraz added: “I’m proud of how I handled the match mentally. I stayed consistent and focused from start to finish. It wasn’t an emotional rollercoaster—I kept my level steady throughout.”

With this victory, Alcaraz not only dethroned the defending champion Alexander Zverev but also secured his return to the No. 2 spot in the PIF ATP Rankings. The win also makes him the first player this year to lift three ATP Tour titles (Rotterdam, Monte Carlo, and now Internazionali BNL d’Italia), and he now leads the PIF ATP Live Race To Turin, eyeing a strong finish to the season.

Gold in Rome

The atmosphere on Campo Centrale was electric, with every changeover echoing chants of “Sinner! Sinner! Sinner!” The crowd’s passion was palpable, turning the stadium into a furnace of noise and energy. Yet Alcaraz remained unfazed by the pressure, showcasing resilience and maturity well beyond his years.

On the other side of the net, Jannik Sinner put together a stunning comeback week after being sidelined for nearly three months. By reaching the final of the Internazionali BNL d’Italia, he became just the third Italian man to achieve that feat, joining legends Adriano Panatta and Corrado Barazzutti. Sinner will now shift his focus to Roland Garros, where he will lead the draw as the top seed and continue his pursuit of a fourth Grand Slam title.
