Roig Arena, a state-of-the-art indoor complex, is set to host a wide spectrum of high-profile events ranging from concerts and exhibitions to sporting competitions. It will also serve as the new home for Valencia Basket, finally replacing the outdated Fonteta de Sant Lluís, which has long struggled to meet capacity demands.

The construction of Roig Arena is nearly complete, with its grand opening expected in just under a year. Designed to accommodate approximately 15,600 spectators for basketball games and up to 18,600 guests in concert configuration, the arena is poised to become one of Spain’s most dynamic entertainment hubs.

Entertainment in the city of arts

Occupying 47,000 square meters, the venue is located in the Quatre Carreres district of Valencia, bordered by Ángel de Villena, Bomber Ramón Duart, and Antonio Ferrandis streets. It stands adjacent to the renowned L’Alqueria del Basket training center and the current Fuente de San Luis arena. The project is spearheaded by Licampa 1617, a company established by Juan Roig—executive chairman and majority shareholder of Mercadona.

Architecturally, the arena showcases an ambitious vision. Its core structure consists of massive steel trusses supporting prefabricated concrete slabs. The roof is formed by eight colossal beams stretching the length of the building, giving it a distinct visual rhythm. The exterior is encased in a suspended ceramic façade composed of movable tiles that create a flowing wave effect when rotated, adding to the arena’s modern identity.

More than a stadium

More than just a venue, Roig Arena aims to uplift the surrounding community. Plans include nearly two hectares of green public space and enhanced facilities for the nearby “Les Arts” school. A standout design detail is the arena’s open corner, resembling the mouth of a whale, topped with signage inspired by vintage rock’n’roll records.

The naming of the arena honors Juan Roig, the visionary behind the project. The financial structure is equally notable: the land is municipally owned, the €280 million investment comes from Roig and Hortensia Herrero’s charitable foundation, and a private company created by Roig will operate the facility. However, the city will regain full control of the venue by 2075.

With its cutting-edge infrastructure, thoughtful design, and commitment to the public good, Roig Arena is set to become an emblem of Valencia’s cultural ambition and sporting pride.
