There are race cars—and then there are race cars that made history. The Ferrari F2001 is one of those. It helped Michael Schumacher secure his 2001 World Championship title and will now be offered for sale by RM Sotheby’s just ahead of the Monaco Grand Prix.

Monaco provides a symbolic backdrop for this moment, as it was the venue where Schumacher piloted chassis no. 211 to his only victory at the prestigious circuit during his illustrious time with Ferrari.

That win was just part of the story, though—he also drove this very machine to triumph at the Hungarian Grand Prix, a result that sealed both his 2001 Drivers’ Championship and Ferrari’s Constructors’ title. It marked a turning point, delivering Ferrari their first back-to-back championship wins.

Racing royalty for sale

The significance of this vehicle cannot be overstated. More than a mere machine, it represents a defining chapter in Michael Schumacher’s legacy and the golden era of early-2000s Ferrari dominance. It’s a rare occasion when such a historically important and fully functional Formula 1 car becomes available on the open market.

This isn’t its first auction appearance either. Back in 2017, the same Ferrari was sold in New York, fetching a staggering $7.5 million—at that time, the highest price ever paid for a modern F1 car. While no price estimate has been revealed for the upcoming auction, insiders expect the value to eclipse its last sale, especially considering its current pristine, race-ready condition.

That condition is no coincidence. Ferrari itself has spent the last two years meticulously restoring the F2001, especially its naturally aspirated 3.0-liter Tipo 050 V-10 engine. Thanks to that extensive overhaul, the car not only looks immaculate in its red-and-white livery—complete with Shell’s unmistakable “Pecten” logo—but it also runs perfectly.

Drive the legacy

The best part? This isn’t just a showpiece. The future owner will be eligible to drive it at Ferrari’s exclusive Corse Clienti events, where Maranello’s engineers will provide full technical support. Owning this car means joining an elite club—and maybe even taking it for a lap or two.

The auction will take place on Saturday, May 24, with bidding opening at 9:15 a.m. EDT, just before the Monaco GP qualifying session begins. The timing couldn’t be more poetic. On a day filled with high-octane drama and precision driving, Michael Schumacher’s legendary machine will once again be in the spotlight—this time under the hammer.
