Oscar Piastri delivered an outstanding performance at the Chinese Grand Prix, claiming his third career Formula 1 victory while leading McLaren to an impressive one-two finish.

His teammate, Lando Norris, managed to retain his championship lead despite facing brake complications in the closing laps, which ultimately prevented him from challenging Piastri for the top spot. However, the race was not without controversy, as both Lewis Hamilton and Charles Leclerc, along with Pierre Gasly, were disqualified post-race due to car regulation infractions.

Starting from pole position, Piastri showcased exceptional control and never appeared at risk of losing his lead. This victory was a strong response to his spin at the Australian Grand Prix just a week prior. Norris, meanwhile, faced a late-race scare due to braking issues but successfully defended second place from George Russell, who secured third for the second consecutive race.

Bad race for Ferrari

Ferrari endured a disastrous weekend as both Leclerc and Hamilton were disqualified after initially finishing fifth and sixth, respectively. The ruling came after post-race inspections found their cars in violation of regulations—Hamilton’s Ferrari, in particular, was found to have excessive plank wear, a similar issue to the one that saw him lose second place at the 2023 United States Grand Prix when he was still driving for Mercedes. This left Ferrari empty-handed in Shanghai, earning no points from the event.

Following the disqualifications, Esteban Ocon earned his first points for Haas by moving up to fifth place, while Kimi Antonelli of Mercedes and Alex Albon of Williams advanced to sixth and seventh, respectively. Young British driver Oliver Bearman put on an impressive display, surging through the field in the latter half of the race using an alternative strategy to secure eighth place. Meanwhile, Aston Martin’s Lance Stroll and Williams’ Carlos Sainz were also promoted into the points as a result of the disqualification.

Piastri dominates

From the moment the lights went out, Piastri demonstrated why he is a serious title contender this season. Apart from the pit stop phase, he led every lap of the Chinese Grand Prix with a controlled and strategic drive. His teamwork with Norris was evident early on when he strategically blocked Russell at Turn 1, allowing Norris to capitalize and move into second place—a critical advantage given the track conditions in Shanghai.

Despite losing second place momentarily to Russell due to an undercut during the only round of pit stops, Norris quickly reclaimed his position with a bold move into Turn 1. McLaren’s dominant performance not only secured their one-two finish but also extended their lead in the Constructors’ Championship, now 25 points ahead of Mercedes. Red Bull trails by 42 points, while Ferrari finds itself struggling, already 61 points behind.

Reflecting on his remarkable weekend, Piastri expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance, stating: “It’s been an incredible weekend from start to finish. The car has been fantastic, and I think today was a bit of a surprise in terms of how the tires behaved.”

Looking ahead, Formula 1 now prepares for the iconic Suzuka Circuit, where the Japanese Grand Prix will take place from April 4-6.
