From Alexander Calder’s groundbreaking first BMW Art Car Collection to Julie Mehretu’s most recent creation.

These “rolling sculptures” have captivated audiences worldwide, offering a visual timeline of artistic movements such as minimalism, pop art, abstraction, and digital art.

Now, to commemorate 50 years of this visionary project, BMW is launching its most ambitious exhibition to date—a world tour spanning all five continents.

Art and Speed: A Legacy of Creative Freedom

The BMW Art Car Collection has always been a playground for artists eager to explore the intersection of speed and creativity.

Since 1975, international juries composed of museum directors have carefully selected artists to collaborate with BMW’s engineering and design teams, allowing them complete freedom to interpret a car as a canvas.

Over the years, the collection has featured works from iconic names such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, and Cao Fei.

Andy Warhol, who painted the fourth Art Car in 1979, famously remarked, “I love that car. It has turned out better than the artwork.”

His sentiment captures the essence of the collection—cars that transcend their function and become living pieces of art.

The BMW Art Car World Tour: A Journey Across Five Continents

To honor this milestone, BMW is unveiling an extensive exhibition program under the BMW Art Car Collection banner.

The tour begins in Europe and Asia, featuring special showcases at major cultural events.

From March 20-21, Art Cars created by Warhol, Lichtenstein, Rauschenberg, Hockney, and Koons will be displayed at the Museum of Applied Arts and the SPARK Art Fair in Vienna.

Simultaneously, Mehretu’s latest creation—the 20th BMW Art Car, a BMW M Hybrid V8—will embark on an Asian tour, making its debut at Art Basel Hong Kong from March 28-30.

Further celebrating the fusion of automotive culture and contemporary art, Sandro Chia’s 13th Art Car will take center stage at the prestigious Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este at Lake Como in May.

Later, in July and August, the Louwman Museum in The Hague will present a unique exhibition featuring eight of these legendary vehicles.

Beyond the Car: Expanding the Art Car Initiative

The influence of the BMW Art Car Collection extends beyond the automotive industry, inspiring new creative collaborations.

Julie Mehretu’s contribution is not just a car but a catalyst for artistic discourse.

In 2025, she will lead a series of workshops across five African countries in partnership with the African Film and Media Arts Collective (AFMAC), nurturing emerging filmmakers and media artists.

Their work will be presented in 2026 alongside Mehretu’s Art Car in a special exhibition at the Zeitz MOCAA in Cape Town, curated by Koyo Kouoh, the designated curator of the 2026 Venice Biennale.

As Mehretu states, “The whole BMW Art Car project is about invention, about imagination, about pushing the limits of what can be possible.”

Commemorative Releases: Books, Miniatures, and Fashion

To mark this milestone, BMW is launching a range of commemorative items inspired by the BMW Art Car Collection

A 1:18-scale miniature replica of Mehretu’s Art Car is now available at BMW Lifestyle Shops, with a smaller 1:43-scale model set for release later this year.

BMW has also collaborated with publisher Hatje Cantz to release the third edition of the BMW Art Cars catalog, featuring interviews with the collection’s founders and essays detailing the historical significance of each vehicle.

Additionally, a new Art Car-inspired fashion collaboration with Puma is expected to be unveiled later this year.
