From Alexander Calder’s groundbreaking first BMW Art Car Collection to Julie Mehretu’s most recent creation.
These “rolling sculptures” have captivated audiences worldwide, offering a visual timeline of artistic movements such as minimalism, pop art, abstraction, and digital art.
Now, to commemorate 50 years of this visionary project, BMW is launching its most ambitious exhibition to date—a world tour spanning all five continents.
Art and Speed: A Legacy of Creative Freedom
The BMW Art Car Collection has always been a playground for artists eager to explore the intersection of speed and creativity.
Since 1975, international juries composed of museum directors have carefully selected artists to collaborate with BMW’s engineering and design teams, allowing them complete freedom to interpret a car as a canvas.
Over the years, the collection has featured works from iconic names such as Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, David Hockney, Jenny Holzer, Jeff Koons, and Cao Fei.
Andy Warhol, who painted the fourth Art Car in 1979, famously remarked, “I love that car. It has turned out better than the artwork.”
His sentiment captures the essence of the collection—cars that transcend their function and become living pieces of art.
