Formula One is an arena of precision and endurance, demanding peak performance from drivers and their teams. Inside the cockpit, racers endure intense centrifugal forces while braking and cornering. However, the intensity extends beyond the track, as seen in the reactions of Toto Wolff during high-stakes races.

The CEO and Team Principal of Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team has been spotted wearing a prototype of this watch in the most electrifying race moments. This inspiration led to the creation of a timepiece engineered to endure the relentless demands of motorsport—even on Wolff’s wrist.

As the team reveals its 2025 race car and welcomes new driver Kimi Antonelli alongside George Russell, IWC unveils the Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL Toto Wolff x Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team (Ref. IW356201).

Advanced shock protection

Limited to 100 units, this special edition watch integrates IWC’s proprietary SPRIN-g PROTECT system with a design that reflects the team’s signature black and PETRONAS green palette. The innovative suspension spring, crucial for protecting the movement from sudden impacts, is treated with Super-LumiNova, making it glow in the dark with the team’s distinctive green hue.

Developed by IWC’s engineering division XPL, the patented SPRIN-g PROTECT shock absorption system first appeared in 2021 with the debut of the Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL (Ref. IW357201). This system enhances impact resistance using a cantilever spring that secures the movement inside the case.

When the watch experiences sudden shocks, the spring absorbs most of the impact before it reaches the movement, significantly reducing stress on internal components. Crafted from bulk metallic glass (BMG), this specialized material offers remarkable elasticity, surpassing the durability of traditional crystalline metals.

Cutting-edge materials

The Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL Toto Wolff x Mercedes-AMG PETRONAS Formula One Team features a case and crown made from Ceratanium—an innovative material developed by IWC. Combining the lightweight properties of titanium with the scratch resistance of ceramic, Ceratanium ensures exceptional strength and longevity.

The dial, crafted with a textured grainy finish, is stamped into a brass base using a specialized technique, further reinforcing its technical aesthetic.

The movement is visible through a tinted sapphire glass case back, featuring Toto Wolff’s printed signature. Completing the design, the watch is paired with an integrated PETRONAS green rubber strap, with an additional black rubber strap included for versatility.
