Jeddah Tower: 5 things you need to know about the Skyscraper that will Push Architectural Limits

The ambitious Jeddah Tower construction resumes after years of delay. The world’s tallest skyscraper will be completed in 2028 and will house a luxurious Four Seasons hotel.

The Jeddah Tower project in Saudi Arabia, designed by the renowned Chicago-based firm Adrian Smith + Gill Gordon Architecture, is finally back on track, with completion now scheduled for 2028.

1. Resumption of construction after years of delay

The developer, Kingdom Holding Company, officially announced the resumption of construction during a recent ceremony

.

“Construction of Jeddah Tower, a global icon of ambition and progress, has officially restarted,” stated the developer.

 

2. An Architectural Vision that began in 2011

Originally introduced in 2011 under the name Kingdom Tower, the skyscraper’s construction commenced in 2013. 

 

Although its final measurement remains undisclosed, Jeddah Tower is designed to reach an impressive height of at least 1,001 meters (3,284 ft). 

3. Halted at the 63rd Floor and now moving forward

Despite initial plans to complete the tower by 2020, the project faced significant setbacks.

 

However, recent developments indicate that the long-awaited revival is now a reality. 

 

Reports from the Middle East Economic Digest (MEED) suggested a restart in 2023, which has now been confirmed.

 

Developers anticipate completing a new floor every four days (sic), positioning Jeddah Tower for completion by 2028.

 

4. A landmark for Jeddah’s future

Once finished, Jeddah Tower will serve as the focal point of a newly developed district on the northern side of the city. 

 

The skyscraper will feature a luxurious Four Seasons hotel.

 

Also high-end residential apartments, commercial office spaces, and the world’s highest observation deck on the 157th floor.

 

Renderings of the structure reveal a sleek, glass-covered design that tapers into a striking pinnacle.

5. A Nation pushing architectural boundaries

Jeddah Tower is just one of many groundbreaking projects currently underway in Saudi Arabia. 

 

The country is also advancing the construction of the Mukaab in Riyadh, a massive 400-meter-high (1,312 ft)  cube-shaped structure set to become the world’s largest building. 

 

Additionally, reports suggest that UK-based firm Foster + Partners is designing an unprecedented two-kilometer-high skyscraper, which, if realized, would surpass Jeddah Tower as the tallest building on the planet.

 

With construction now progressing steadily, Jeddah Tower is poised to redefine the global skyline and cement Saudi Arabia’s place at the forefront of architectural innovation.

What is the tallest building in the world right now?

The international non-profit organization Council on Tall Buildings and Urban Habitat (CTBUH) was formed in 1969 and announces the title of “The World’s Tallest Building” and sets the standards by which buildings are measured.

 

It maintains a list of the 100 tallest completed buildings in the world. The organization currently ranks Burj Khalifa in Dubai as the tallest at 828 m (2,717 ft).
