The top ten most expensive works sold at Art Basel Miami Beach 2024

The list includes works by Yayoi Kusama, Keith Haring, and Richard Prince, but the top spot goes to a piece presented by the Hauser & Wirth gallery, which sold for $4.75 million.

Art Basel Miami Beach broke records again this year, welcoming over 75,000 visitors in just three days and generating an economic impact of $547 million.

 

Among the thousands of attendees were collectors, art enthusiasts, and representatives of museums and private collections worldwide, ready to evaluate and open their wallets to invest in contemporary art.

Art Basel Miami Beach organizers said that galleries reported strong demand and some amazing sales. While not all the purchases are public, those that were made public at the end of the exhibition at the Miami Convention Center, LUSTER put together a top ten list of the most expensive ones. The list is led by a piece by David Hammons, presented by Hauser & Wirth, which sold for $4.75 million.

 

The list includes an acrylic painting by renowned Japanese artist Yayoi Kusama, sold for $3.5 million, and a painting from the Nurses series by photographer and painter Richard Prince, purchased for $4.5 million.

 

It is noteworthy that White Cube Gallery sold another Hammons work, Rock Head, for $2.35 million.

For those interested in science fiction, the sculpture “Necronom / Alien III” (1990-2005) by H.R. Giger sold for $1 million. The sculpture is reminiscent of the xenomorph from Alien, created by Giger.

Who is David Hammons?

 

David Hammons is an American artist, known for his works in and around New York City and Los Angeles during the 1970s and 1980s. His works are considered disruptive because they are mainly intervened with discarded materials, and in this way offer an interpretation of African-American history. His relevance today is because his works present a profound critique of American society and the elite art world.

Who is Hauser & Wirth?              

 

Hauser & Wirth is one of the largest galleries in the world. It has offices in major cities such as Los Angeles, London, Paris, New York and Monaco. Owned by Iwan Wirth, his wife Manuela and mother-in-law Ursula Hauser, it represents 103 artists and has recently gained notoriety for its art sales at Art Basel Miami Beach such as works by David Hammons and George Condo.
