This winter, Aspen transforms into a hub of art, culture, and outdoor experiences with a rich lineup of exhibitions, events, and activities.

The Aspen Art Museum takes center stage with several exciting exhibitions, including Shuang Li: I’m Not (Nov. 20, 2024–March 2, 2025), Heji Shin: America (Nov. 20, 2024–March 2, 2025), Ugo Rondinone: the rainbow body (Dec. 12, 2024–March 30, 2025), and Megan Marrin: Austerity (Dec. 12, 2024–Feb. 23, 2025).

Highlighting the season is Heji Shin: America: Part One, featuring newly commissioned works by the Seoul-born, New York-based photographer. The museum, a leader in contemporary art since 1979, moved into its iconic Shigeru Ban-designed building in 2014, known for its woven wood facade, innovative design, and free admission.

 

Aspen Film contributes to the cultural fabric with its Radical Wednesdays series in February 2025, celebrating retro ski films and featuring special guest appearances. Aspen Extreme will screen in December as part of Wintersköl festivities. Aspen Shortsfest, a highlight for film enthusiasts, runs from March 31 to April 6, 2025, showcasing world-class short films.

Celebrating art and nature

The Aspen Historical Society introduces free admission to the Wheeler/Stallard Museum, which hosts Decade by Decade: Aspen Revealed, exploring the town’s rich past. Refreshed signage at historic sites like the Holden/Marolt Mining & Ranching Museum and Ashcroft Ghost Town invites self-guided exploration, connecting visitors to Aspen’s heritage.

 

At Anderson Ranch Arts Center, the fourth annual outdoor sculpture exhibition features 15 works by both emerging and established artists. A holiday open house in December will support the center’s artistic programming. Additional rotating gallery exhibitions and events promise to deepen the connection between visitors and the arts.

The Resnick Center for Herbert Bayer Studies presents Bauhaus Typography at 100, running through April 26, 2025. This exhibition traces the Bauhaus’s enduring influence on modern typography and design, celebrating the legacy of Herbert Bayer, a key figure in Aspen’s cultural history.

Cultural Aspen

Outdoor enthusiasts can embrace the winter landscape with offerings from the Aspen Center for Environmental Studies (ACES). Guided snowshoeing tours at Ashcroft and the Pine Creek Cookhouse provide scenic views, while ACES naturalists lead engaging excursions on Aspen and Snowmass Mountains. The Potbelly Perspectives and Wild Perspectives lecture series return, fostering conversations about environmental stewardship.

 

The recently reopened Catto Center at Toklat celebrates its 75th anniversary with 10 Days of Toklat from December 21–30, 2024. This series of daily events marks the winter solstice and holiday season, offering unique programming that reflects Aspen’s commitment to conservation and community.

Aspen’s vibrant winter lineup merges art, history, and nature, reaffirming its reputation as a dynamic cultural destination. Whether through contemporary art exhibitions, historic explorations, or immersive outdoor activities, the town offers something for everyone. Each initiative, from the Aspen Art Museum to ACES, exemplifies a commitment to accessibility, innovation, and community engagement, ensuring a memorable season for visitors and locals alike.
