Martos Gallery (Galleries Sector, New York, US)
The 1980s were a transformative era in New York, marked by seismic cultural, social, and political shifts. Martos Gallery captures the essence of this pivotal decade by presenting six influential artists whose works reflect its dynamic spirit.
Highlights include Keith Haring, a trailblazer who fused street art and fine art into a cohesive visual language, and Dan Asher, whose multifaceted oeuvre spans performance, sculpture, drawing, and video. The lineup also features Michael Auder, an experimental filmmaker and photographer associated with Andy Warhol’s Factory, and Kathleen White, whose deeply personal works speak to the grief and resilience sparked by the AIDS crisis.
Gallery Vacancy (Nova Sector, Shanghai, China)
Established in 2017, Gallery Vacancy embraces its role as a fresh voice in the global art scene, as suggested by its name. This Shanghai-based gallery brings three compelling artists to Art Basel Miami Beach. Henry Curchod will present monumental paintings and sculptures that invite viewers into narrative-rich, contemplative spaces.
Sydney Shen, known for her unsettling yet mesmerizing installations, delves into psychological and existential themes through intricate and provocative sculptures. Rounding out the trio is Michael Ho, a second-generation Chinese immigrant from the Netherlands, whose textured, pattern-heavy paintings explore themes of diaspora, identity, and cultural memory.
ILY2 (Survey Sector, Portland, US)
Operating out of an unorthodox space within a Portland, Oregon mall, ILY2 adopts a subversive approach to blending retail culture with art. Dedicated to feminine and socially conscious art, the gallery’s booth will spotlight the works of Bonnie Lucas, an artist whose career spans decades of exploring the intersection of femininity and consumerism.
Lucas uses hand-sewn assemblages made from everyday objects such as sewing tools and dollar-store items. Her creations oscillate between kitsch and critique, offering a playful yet profound commentary on the commodification of gender and identity.
Carmo Johnson Projects (Positions Sector, São Paulo, Brazil)
This São Paulo-based gallery specializes in showcasing Brazilian and Indigenous artists whose works bridge the realms of environmental consciousness and cultural heritage. At Art Basel Miami Beach, Carmo Johnson Projects will highlight the MAHKU collective, a group of Huni Kuin Indigenous artists from the Brazilian Amazon.
Known for their vibrant, narrative-driven paintings, the collective portrays myths and spiritual experiences tied to their cultural heritage. Their booth will include works inspired by ayahuasca rituals, echoing the mystical symbolism of their acclaimed mural at the Venice Biennale, which reimagined the legend of a mythical alligator ferrying humans across the Bering Strait.
These four galleries exemplify the rich diversity and innovative spirit that define this year’s Art Basel Miami Beach, promising visitors a captivating journey through a wide spectrum of artistic narratives and perspectives.
