Darlington Public School named world’s best building at WAF 2024

In a global competition featuring over 200 entries, the Darlington Public School, located in the Chippendale suburb of Sydney, Australia, was awarded Best Building of the Year at the World Architecture Festival (WAF) in Singapore on Friday, November 8.

Competing against high-profile projects such as skyscrapers and airports, Darlington’s win marks the second consecutive year a school has earned this prestigious accolade, highlighting the growing appreciation for architectural innovations in educational spaces.

The original Darlington school building, constructed in 1970, had long been deemed unsuitable for modern educational needs. The architects responsible for the redesign described their work as a “radical transformation” that reimagined the campus to create “state-of-the-art, contemporary learning environments.” Impressively, the school remained operational throughout the renovation process to minimize disruptions to students and the local community.

A central aim of the redesign was to foster a meaningful connection between students and Indigenous culture. This vision was realized by incorporating Aboriginal art throughout the campus, including on building facades and in communal spaces. Additionally, green areas were developed to feature native plants, offering students opportunities to learn about Indigenous food and cultural traditions.

Celebrating culture and community

The project, designed by FJC Studio, received praise for its inclusive and thoughtful approach to creating a diverse and enriching environment for students. “The true beneficiaries are the children who will enjoy this space, a place designed to inspire and enrich their lives for years to come,” noted Alessandro Rossi, a collaborator on the project.

Rossi also reflected on the significance of the award, stating, “It’s a modest school project, yet winning against such large-scale entries at WAF is a testament to the client’s vision and the community engagement that drove the design process.” FJC Studio described receiving the 2024 award as “deeply humbling, especially given the relatively small scale of the building.”

Paul Finch, WAF’s program director, highlighted the school’s innovative features, including an inner courtyard visible from the main entrance. Finch emphasized that the project exceeded its original brief by integrating feedback and experiences from the local community.

Global recognition for innovative design

Darlington’s victory adds to a prestigious list of WAF award winners in recent years, which includes a senior housing complex in Singapore and a power plant in Copenhagen, Denmark. Interestingly, last year’s Best Building award also went to a school: the Huizhen High School in China, described as a “floating forest school.” This innovative project was a collaboration between Beijing’s Approach Design Studio and the Zhejiang University of Technology Engineering Design Group.

Other notable 2024 WAF awards included Future Project of the Year, which went to the Küçükçekmece Djemevi civic building in Turkey, designed by EAA-Emre Arolat Architecture. This structure was recognized for addressing the cultural marginalization of the Alevi community.

With Darlington’s win, the importance of community-focused and culturally significant architecture takes center stage, demonstrating that even modest projects can have a lasting impact on their communities and the architectural world.
