Jannik Sinner defeated 2020 champion Daniil Medvedev 6-3, 6-4, finishing atop the group stage standings for the second consecutive year and booking his place in the semifinals at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin.

The top seed’s commanding performance against Medvedev capped a perfect 3-0 record in the round-robin phase. Joining Sinner in the semifinals is Taylor Fritz, who clinched a vital win against Alex de Minaur to secure his spot. This marks Fritz’s second semifinal appearance at the year-end tournament, following his debut run in 2022.

Despite Medvedev’s brief rally in the second set, where he strung together three consecutive games, Sinner quickly regained control. The 22-year-old sealed the match in just 73 minutes, reaffirming his status as one of the most consistent and dominant players of the tournament.

Italian triumph

“I’m always looking for new ways to improve as a player,” Sinner said after improving his round-robin record at the Nitto ATP Finals to 7-1. “Daniil and I know each other very well. Every time we step on the court, we try to tweak our tactics. I felt prepared for what he might bring today.”

Sinner’s 2023 season has been nothing short of remarkable. He aims to join tennis legends Roger Federer and Novak Djokovic as the only men to win the Australian Open, US Open, and Nitto ATP Finals in the same year.

His journey continues against the runner-up from the John Newcombe Group. Currently, Alexander Zverev leads that group, with Casper Ruud in second place. The final standings will be decided after Friday’s matches, where Zverev faces Carlos Alcaraz and Ruud takes on Andrey Rublev.

“I’m aware of what I’ve accomplished this year, so I try to step onto the court with a positive mindset,” Sinner said. “Having a fantastic team supporting me every day is crucial, and I’m trying to enjoy my time on the court. The atmosphere here is incredible, and I want to deliver good tennis this week. Let’s see what the next round has in store.”

Perfect record

By defeating Medvedev, Sinner not only confirmed his place in the semifinals but also took the lead in their head-to-head record for the first time in his career. After losing their first six meetings, Sinner has turned the tide in their rivalry. This year alone, he closed the gap, tying their record at 7-7 in October after a win in the Shanghai Masters quarterfinals, and now leads 8-7.

The 23-year-old has been on an extraordinary run, with a 24-1 record in his last five tournaments. He’s also amassed 48 hard-court victories this season out of 51 matches, underscoring his dominance on this surface.

With his 68th win of the year, Sinner ties Zverev for the most victories on the ATP Tour in 2023. This achievement marks the first time since 2015, when Novak Djokovic and Andy Murray achieved similar feats, that two players have recorded more than 68 wins in a single season.
