Florida welcomes Dream Golf’s Old Shores: a new standard in public golf

Florida’s panhandle is now the latest addition to Dream Golf’s expanding portfolio of premier destination properties, joining the windswept Rodeo Dunes of eastern Colorado and the secluded Wild Spring Dunes in East Texas.

Michael and Chris Keiser, sons of Bandon Dunes’ co-founder Mike Keiser, are leading this new venture, known as Old Shores, which will feature an 18-hole course crafted by the renowned golf architect Tom Doak. Located approximately 30 miles from the Panama City Bay County Airport, Old Shores is easily accessible to visitors from the Gulf Coast resort areas along Florida’s Panhandle.

After securing a Development Order from Washington County, Dream Golf gained approval to add Old Shores to their collection, which now includes sites in Colorado and Texas. Michael Keiser shared his enthusiasm for the project, calling the new Northwest Florida site “amazing and unexpected,” noting that multiple holes would be set along Long Lake’s scenic edges.

“This land has a way of pulling you along, enticing you to explore the next bend or rise,” Keiser remarked. “The variety here is remarkable – each visit reveals a fresh side of the landscape.”

New horizons

With the inception of Bandon Dunes along Oregon’s rugged coast and Sand Valley in Wisconsin, Dream Golf has established itself as a leader in crafting next-generation, experiential golf destinations. Michael and Chris Keiser, instrumental in creating Sand Valley, are now overseeing the development of Old Shores and the other Dream Golf locations.

“We’re excited to keep progressing with our vision for this unique property,” Michael Keiser continued. “I’ve walked through the course layout multiple times with Tom Doak, and I’m certain this will be a top-tier project.”

Doak, a leading name in modern golf course design, has worked on some of Dream Golf’s iconic courses, including Pacific Dunes and Old Macdonald at Bandon Dunes and Sedge Valley at Sand Valley.

An oasis for golfers

Although a projected opening date for Old Shores hasn’t been announced, the potential for additional courses on the expansive site remains open, following the philosophy set by the Keiser family’s “two courses make a destination” approach.

The development area for Old Shores includes over 1,400 acres, incorporating the picturesque Long Lake, though the entire parcel acquired by Dream Golf may extend beyond this initial footprint. While additional golf courses might become part of Old Shores in the future, this project marks Dream Golf’s first high-end public course in Florida, the state with the highest number of golf courses nationwide.

According to the National Golf Foundation, Florida leads in new course developments, with over 20 projects underway.

However, most of these are upscale private clubs in regions like Hobe Sound or Stuart in Southeast Florida (Apogee Club, Atlantic Fields, Calusa Creek, and Rolling Sands) or near Tampa and Naples on the western side (Miakka, Outsider Club, Soleta, and Kinsale). Dream Golf’s venture with Old Shores introduces a fresh approach, expanding the reach of world-class public golf in a state known for its private golf developments.
