Coco Gauff (3rd) managed to reverse her unfavorable record against Iga Swiatek (2nd) this Tuesday in the Orange Group of the WTA Finals in Riyadh, defeating her in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4, and securing her place in the semifinals.

With this victory, Gauff surprised Swiatek, who had previously beaten her in 11 of their 12 prior encounters, placing herself once again among the top four in the event for the second consecutive year.

At 20 years and 237 days, the Delray Beach, Florida, native became the youngest American to reach consecutive semifinals at this prestigious tournament since Tracy Austin achieved it in 1979-80.

Although Gauff delivered a solid performance, her Achilles’ heel remained her serve, recording a total of 11 double faults throughout the match.

The American, holder of eight titles, two of them in the current season, made history by becoming the first player under 21 to win her first two round-robin matches at the WTA Finals since 2007, when Ana Ivanovic and Maria Sharapova also shone at the tournament in Madrid, Spain.

To complete the group stage with a perfect score, Gauff will face Czech player Barbora Krejcikova (11th) in the next round.

Krejcikova lost her first match to Swiatek 4-6, 7-5, 6-2 but stayed in the running by defeating Pegula 6-3, 6-3, keeping her chances alive to advance to the next round.
