This decision marks the end of Novak Djokovic’s season, meaning he will not defend his title at one of the most anticipated tournaments on the ATP calendar, set to kick off this Sunday. His absence comes as a blow to fans who were eager to see him in action one final time this year.

In a heartfelt Instagram story, Djokovic shared, “It’s an honor to qualify for the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. I was very excited to compete, but due to an ongoing injury, I won’t be able to play next week. Apologies to everyone who planned to see me. I wish all the players a great tournament. See you soon.”

This season has been a challenging one for Djokovic, who, at 37, has focused on careful match selection to manage his fitness. While he sought to add to his impressive haul of 24 Grand Slam titles, 2024 has not been his strongest year in that regard. His pursuit of further major titles was hindered by a knee injury during the French Open, which he worked to overcome quickly in time for Wimbledon.

Injury ends his season

However, his crowning achievement for the year came not at a Grand Slam, but at the Paris Olympic Games, where he clinched his long-coveted Olympic gold medal—a milestone he has been chasing throughout his career and a defining moment for him this year.

Djokovic’s most recent competitive appearance was at the Six Kings Slam, an exhibition event where he faced tough competition from players like Jannik Sinner, who defeated him, and Rafael Nadal, whom Djokovic overcame to secure third place.

His last official ATP match was in Shanghai, where he lost in the final to Sinner. Although this year didn’t expand his Grand Slam count, securing Olympic gold has been a significant accomplishment, bringing his storied career one step closer to being fully decorated with every major title available.

ATP Finals 2024 without Djokovic

With Djokovic officially stepping away from the ATP Finals, his 2024 season comes to a close. Serbia will also not be competing in the upcoming Davis Cup Finals in Málaga, which doubles as Rafael Nadal’s farewell tournament. As the new season approaches, Djokovic, the last remaining active member of the iconic “Big Three,” stands ready to hold his place amidst an emerging generation of tennis talents.

Meanwhile, the 2024 Nitto ATP Finals in Turin promise to deliver thrilling matchups as the top eight players of the season gather to compete in the year’s final showcase of elite talent. The tournament, held at the Pala Alpitour, will use a round-robin format leading into knockout rounds to crown the ATP champion for the year. Fans can expect to see world-class skill, endurance, and sportsmanship on full display as the season reaches its climax, with a new champion ready to emerge.
