MDD Annual Design Commission: Pearl Jam by Nicole Nomsa Moyo
In collaboration with the Design Miami Curatorial Lab, the Miami Design District presents Nicole Nomsa Moyo as the winner of the 2024 Annual Design Commission.
This installation, titled Pearl Jam, marks its tenth edition, drawing inspiration from South Africa’s Ndebele tribe, with large-scale interactive experiences, including giant pearl and jewelry-themed sculptures. Over 1,000 handcrafted “earrings” created by Ndebele women will adorn the neighborhood’s trees.

Living the Dream by Alteronce Gumby in the Miami Design District
New York-based artist Alteronce Gumby will unveil his mural Living the Dream this December in the Miami Design District, marking his first public mural installation and largest work to date.
This piece will transform the space with a vibrant mosaic of stained glass, gemstones, fossils, and tiles. Inspired by Fauvism, Gumby will use materials such as jade, turquoise, red jasper, and fossilized shark teeth, continuing his exploration of cosmic themes and color, influenced by his work Vertigo Colors and The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Vertigo of Color exhibition.

Musa Coccinea Mural by Bony Ramirez
The Musa Coccinea mural takes its name from the scientific name for the “scarlet banana,” a plant from the same family as the common banana but with a vibrant yellow flower. The piece features a figure in the style of classic portraiture, evoking presence and respect, surrounded by palm leaves and plantain trees.
This figure symbolizes Caribbean beauty and power. By using the plant’s scientific name, Bony honors its origins, celebrating his Caribbean heritage. Musa represents both the botanical classification for bananas and the term “muse” in Spanish, evoking the strength and beauty of female figures, each powerful in their solitude.
