The Miami Design District will celebrate the 10th edition of its Design Commission with an interactive work by Nicole Nomsa Moyo titled “Pearl Jam,” to be unveiled during Miami Art Week 2024 in collaboration with the Design Miami Curatorial Lab.

Award-winning designer Nomsa Moyo, originally from Zimbabwe and now based in Toronto, is known for her creations that explore cultural identity and expression.

“Pearl Jam” is an interactive installation featuring four jewelry-themed experiences, with sculptures of giant pearls, a deconstructable necklace, an expansive bracelet, a pearl tree, and hanging earrings. These geometric shapes and vivid colors reflect a universal language that invites visitors to connect actively with the artwork.

“‘Pearl Jam’ emerged from a reflection on the rich cultural heritage I carry within, merging it with contemporary design to create a narrative that honors and transforms tradition,” says Moyo. Inspired by the vibrant patterns and colors of the Ndebele tribe, her work aims to connect with cultures around the world, highlighting human creativity and identity.

In the upcoming December 2024 issue of Luster + Arts, themed “Sense & Shapes,” an exclusive interview with Nicole Nomsa Moyo will be featured. This conversation will delve into the artistic and cultural vision behind her “Pearl Jam” installation for the Miami Design District, exploring how her African roots and experience in contemporary design intertwine to create a unique visual narrative.

The interview will give readers an in-depth look at Moyo’s inspiration and creative process, as well as the values of sustainability and community that underpin her work.

The installation represents a balance between tradition and modernity. The larger elements are crafted from sustainable materials, while the “earrings” are handmade by Ndebele women, who will create over 1,000 pieces with locally sourced materials.

This collaboration highlights the talent of African artisans, each piece symbolizing a cultural connection and a testament to empowerment.

Grela Orihuela, Senior Vice President of Design Miami, notes, “In selecting Nicole Moyo, we sought a designer who reflected the Commission’s global perspective. We are thrilled to collaborate with her, as her work preserves and shares the creative practices of Ndebele women, interpreting this tradition in a contemporary context.”

Each year, the Miami Design District invites a visionary creator to revitalize its public space.

The installations integrate with the architectural and natural surroundings, adding dynamism to the community and premiering at the most vibrant time of year—Miami Art Week.
