Holding the champion’s trophy in Beijing, Carlos Alcaraz thanked his team and family for their support during a difficult couple of months. This time, however, he admitted they had told him things he didn’t want to hear but that ultimately helped him get through a rough patch.

Following the Paris Olympic Games, Alcaraz went through a small but understandable emotional crisis, perhaps due to the intense demands of previous months. His triumph in Beijing, particularly against a fierce rival like Jannik Sinner, could be seen as a key turning point in his recovery.

The tenth chapter of the Alcaraz-Sinner rivalry delivered on its promise, turning into a three-hour and 20-minute battle where both players had their chances. Alcaraz started the match with authority, dominating Sinner as he had done with other opponents throughout the tournament.

The rivalry grows

However, as the Spaniard tried to serve out the first set, Sinner staged a comeback. The Italian recovered from a break down, leveling the score just when Alcaraz appeared on the verge of victory. Sinner then saved three set points, including two in the tiebreak, turning a 4-6 deficit into an 8-6 win, stunning Alcaraz and taking the opening set.

Both players struggled with their serve, a key aspect in their performance. For Alcaraz, an ongoing issue was his failure to capitalize on break-point opportunities. Throughout the match, he created 15 chances but managed to convert only three. Losing the first set after being in control was a psychological blow for the Spaniard, who briefly lost momentum in the second set.

The most crucial moment of the match for Alcaraz came at 3-4 in the second set. In a game that lasted 15 minutes, he faced two break points that would have likely ended his chances. The Spaniard saved the first with a 216 km/h ace and the second with a 209 km/h serve aimed at Sinner’s body, preventing the Italian from returning the shot. From this pivotal moment, Alcaraz found his rhythm, winning three consecutive games to claim the second set 6-4, forcing a decisive third.

From crisis to champion

In the final set, Alcaraz once again took an early break, but Sinner responded, leveling the match and pushing it to another tiebreak. Sinner appeared in control early in the breaker, racing to a 3-0 lead, seemingly on course for victory.

But Alcaraz showcased his fighting spirit and responded with two spectacular points that rattled Sinner, causing the Italian to make crucial errors. The Spaniard displayed composure under pressure, aggressively moving to the net to hit forehand winners and finished the match by winning seven consecutive points in the tiebreak.
