The Team World star claimed his seventh victory against a Top 10 player in 2024 by defeating European Alexander Zverev 6-4, 7-5 in the Laver Cup on Saturday.

Fritz overcame a 2-4 deficit in the second set, securing a one-hour and 57-minute win, marking his third consecutive tour victory against Zverev. This result gave Team World an 8-4 lead after Day 2 in Berlin.

“I think over the years, we’ve always had tight matches,” Fritz said in his post-match press conference, commenting on his rivalry with Zverev.

“I think the matchups are good. I can serve and hold my serve because he’s very hard to break. You have to have a good serve to stay in the match with him, or otherwise, he’ll take you out of it.”

“His backhand is incredibly good. I think my backhand is also my strongest side, so I feel like I can neutralize it and hang in with him on that side, where maybe other people wouldn’t be able to. But the most important thing is that I’ve been playing well.”

The 26-year-old Fritz arrived in Germany after reaching his first Grand Slam final at the US Open, where he defeated Zverev in four sets in the quarterfinals.

After also beating him in the fourth round of Wimbledon in July, Fritz now leads their Lexus ATP Head2Head series 6-5.

Fritz fired a series of winners from the baseline to defeat Zverev on his home turf in Berlin, where Team World, under the leadership of captain John McEnroe, is aiming for a third consecutive victory in the team event.

Though Zverev harnessed the support of the local crowd to break ahead in the second set, he couldn’t hold his advantage, while Fritz secured the win with 27 winners to Zverev’s 11.

Meanwhile, Ben Shelton and Alejandro Tabilo impressively capitalized on Fritz’s momentum for Team World, cruising to a comfortable doubles victory over Casper Ruud and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the day’s final match.

The duo won 6-1, 6-2, extending John McEnroe’s men’s lead to 8-4 heading into Day 3, where four matches worth three points each will be played.

“We put Shelton and Tabilo together, and they really stepped up,” captain McEnroe said in his on-court interview. “We had a great day, and we’re excited for tomorrow.”

“We need two wins, and I think tomorrow we’ll go all out in the doubles. I like our chances, and hopefully, if we win, we’ll need just one of the three singles matches. Team Europe is fantastic, with three of the top four players in the world, so we know we have a lot of work, but we’re fully focused on tomorrow.”
