Björn Borg bid farewell to the Laver Cup with a new Rolex, but the highlight was undoubtedly having the chance to coach a phenomenon like Carlos Alcaraz from the bench.

Alexander Zverev was confident after saving the first ‘match ball’ in the Laver Cup, pitting Europe against the Rest of the World, with his victory over Frances Tiafoe.

“We’re definitely going to win because Alcaraz is the best player in the world,” Zverev declared with complete confidence. He was right, both in his prediction and his description of the young Spaniard, who defeated Taylor Fritz 6-2, 7-5.

Alcaraz, a true spectacle, has found a competition that perfectly suits his skills. The Murcian enjoyed the weekend in Berlin and delighted the thousands of fans present at the Uber Arena in the German capital.

Rafael Nadal lifted the trophy in 2017 and 2019. Alcaraz, a worthy successor to the Manacor native, will join him at the ‘Six Kings Slam’ in Saudi Arabia and could repeat his success at the Davis Cup Final 8 in Málaga.

Unlike Nadal, who couldn’t secure the decisive point in his two victories representing Europe, Alcaraz delivered, emerging as the hero of the 2024 Laver Cup.

The world number three already had the upper hand in the third game, with a ‘break’ that left Fritz struggling with his serves. The court favored exchanges from the baseline, where Alcaraz was unbeatable.

The same pattern repeated in the second set, with another break in the third game. Fritz, despite being in the best form of his life after reaching the US Open final, seemed powerless against the champion of four major titles.

A timid reaction Taylor Fritz managed to get back in the game after some unforced errors from Alcaraz in the eighth game. A forehand to the doubles alley allowed Fritz to level the score at 4-4. However, Carlitos’ greatness knows no bounds, and he closed out the match. Final score: Europe 13, Rest of the World 11.

Organized by Team8, the management company co-founded by Roger Federer, the competition pits a team representing Europe against a team from the Rest of the World. Played over three days, the event features singles and doubles matches, with points increasing each day.

The tournament stands out for its unique format and team dynamics, bringing together top-ranked players who typically compete individually. Europe has traditionally dominated the event, with notable appearances from tennis icons like Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic.
