Frances Tiafoe, ranked 20th in the world, advanced after Grigor Dimitrov, the 9th seed, was forced to retire when Tiafoe was leading 6-3, 6-7 (5), 6-3, 4-1.

On the other hand, Taylor Fritz, the world No. 12, battled past Alexander Zverev, ranked 4th, in a tightly contested match that lasted three hours and 26 minutes, with a score of 7-6 (2), 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (3).

This outcome means that U.S. fans will see one of their own in the semifinals without worrying about their elimination before the final. With the American flag guaranteed to fly in the tournament’s final stages, the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium is expected to bring an extra layer of energy, with “U-S-A” chants likely to fill the arena as they cheer on their players. It’s a momentous occasion for American tennis, as it has been 18 years and 75 Grand Slam tournaments since a similar scenario occurred.

Taylor Fritz enters this stage with a clear historical advantage over his opponent. While Frances Tiafoe managed to beat Fritz in their first-ever match back in 2016, Fritz has dominated their head-to-head encounters ever since, winning all six of their subsequent meetings. However, Tiafoe has the upper hand when it comes to U.S. Open experience. In 2022, he reached the semifinals of the tournament, showing that he can perform at the highest level under pressure in New York.

Homegrown heroes

The 2024 edition of the U.S. Open will be the first time since 2005 that two American players have reached the semifinals. The last time this happened was when Robby Ginepri and Andre Agassi faced off in the semis, with Agassi emerging victorious.

However, Agassi would eventually lose in the final to Roger Federer, who would go on to solidify his legendary status by defeating another American player, Andy Roddick, in the final the following year. To this day, Roddick remains the last American man to reach the U.S. Open final.

Italian prodigy

In another dramatic quarterfinal, Italy’s Jannik Sinner punched his ticket to the 2024 U.S. Open semifinals by defeating Daniil Medvedev in a high-stakes match that ended with a 6-2, 1-6, 6-1, 6-4 scoreline after two hours and 41 minutes of intense competition. Sinner, a rising star in the tennis world, now prepares to face Britain’s Jack Draper in what promises to be another exciting semifinal showdown.

The match between Sinner and Medvedev was filled with tension from the beginning, with both players struggling to maintain consistency throughout. Despite the scoreline shifting dramatically between sets, the dynamic of the game intensified as both players pushed each other to the limit.

Medvedev’s frustrations became increasingly apparent as the match progressed, but he remained resilient, believing in his chances until the very end. Despite the support from the crowd at Arthur Ashe Stadium, which had rallied behind Medvedev, Sinner’s unrelenting performance proved too much for the Russian.

With the stage set for an electrifying final weekend at the U.S. Open, the home crowd’s energy and the emerging talents of players like Tiafoe, Fritz, Draper and Sinner promise to deliver thrilling tennis as the tournament draws to its conclusion.
