World number 8 Casper Ruud could not advance to the men’s singles quarterfinals of the draw at the 2024 US Open. On Sunday, September 1st, the Norwegian lost 6-4, 4-6, 3-6, 4-6 to American Taylor Fritz at the Louis Armstrong Stadium.

The American star won the match in two hours and 43 minutes to secure his place among the top eight.

Fritz lost the first set but improved his game from the second set onward. He put Ruud under pressure with 24 aces. The fact that he won 84 percent of his points (53 of 63) on his first serves showed how dominant he was.

He also converted four of his 10 break-point opportunities to surpass Ruud, who finished as the runner-up in 2022 after losing to Carlos Alcaraz.

The American, who lost to Ruud in the fourth round of the French Open earlier this year, made sure history did not repeat itself at Flushing Meadows. In an impressive performance, Fritz unleashed 56 winners to Ruud’s 32 and took advantage of the support of the local crowd to take the win dominantly.

Fritz will next face Germany’s Alexander Zverev, winner of the other round-of-16 match against America’s Brandon Nakashima.

Dimitrov and Badosa Advance

Earlier, Grigor Dimitrov overcame Andrey Rublev in an exciting five-set match and booked his place in the quarterfinals of the hardcourt tournament.

The Bulgarian won the match 6-3, 7-6 (7-3), 1-6, 3-6, 6-3 in three hours and 39 minutes.

Dimitrov will seek a spot in the semifinals when he faces Frances Tiafoe in the quarterfinals.

Spanish player Paula Badosa also continued her decent run of form after defeating China’s Wang Yafan in straight sets. The 26-year-old is looking for her first spot in a Grand Slam semifinal.

Known for his powerful serve, aggressive baseline play, and towering presence on the court, Fritz has proven himself as a formidable contender on the ATP Tour and a fan favorite worldwide.

Early life and tennis roots

Born on October 28, 1997, in Rancho Santa Fe, California, Taylor Fritz was practically destined for a tennis career.

This strong tennis heritage naturally paved the way for Fritz’s entry into the sport.

From a young age, Fritz exhibited remarkable talent, quickly making a name for himself in the junior circuit.

In 2015, he was crowned the world’s top-ranked junior player, winning the US Open Junior title and finishing as the runner-up at the French Open Junior that same year. These accomplishments signaled the arrival of a new American talent ready to take on the professional stage.
