Ferrari just revealed the race suits that Carlos Sainz and Charles Leclerc will be wearing at the upcoming Italian F1 Grand Prix in Monza. The new suits, designed in a striking carbon fiber black, have significantly heightened anticipation surrounding the event and the car itself.

Traditionally, when Ferrari competes at their home Grand Prix, they have introduced a notable change in their color scheme. However, this year the change is currently limited to the drivers’ suits and the clothing the team will wear throughout the weekend, including caps, shoes, and sunglasses.

At the iconic Autodromo Nazionale Monza, where the grandstands will undoubtedly be filled with fans dressed in Ferrari’s historic red, Sainz and Leclerc will stand out in their new black race suits. These suits do more than just reflect a new color; they also mirror the texture of the carbon fiber that constitutes a significant 61% of the material used in their SF-24 car.

The design of the suits features large swathes of black and grey tones on the upper sections, while the lower parts and back are adorned with stripes. The classic Modena Yellow makes a prominent appearance on the shoulder inserts and sponsor logos, except for the logos of Shell and HP, which retain their original color schemes.

Monza madness

An interesting detail in the design of these race suits is found in the belts, which feature bands displaying the national flag colors of both drivers—white and red for Monaco in honor of Leclerc, and red and yellow for Spain, representing Sainz.

The unveiling of these new suits on Ferrari’s social media platforms has sparked a wave of speculation among fans, with many wondering if the car itself will also sport a new livery this year. This curiosity is fuelled by the fact that Ferrari has unveiled special designs for its cars at Monza in the past two seasons, adding to the excitement surrounding this year’s event.

Racing in style

In 2022, Ferrari gave special prominence to the color yellow, a nod to their rich history, and in 2023, they expanded the use of yellow even further, aligning the car’s design with the livery they used during their victorious Le Mans campaign.

This year, there’s growing speculation that Ferrari might adopt an even more radical approach by incorporating black into their car’s design. This potential shift to black, while aligning with the trend of other teams opting to leave carbon fiber unpainted to save weight, could be seen as a bold move for Ferrari, whose brand identity has been so closely tied to their iconic red.

Nonetheless, there is some historical precedent for Ferrari incorporating black into their car’s design, though the context was different. During the 2001 Italian GP, just days after the tragic events of 9/11, Ferrari ran cars with an all-black nose as a sign of mourning. Similarly, in the 2005 Bahrain GP, they adopted a black nose in tribute to the passing of Pope John Paul II.
