The Italian prodigy and current ATP No. 1, Jannik Sinner, fresh off a controversial double positive test, faced a stiff challenge from American Mackenzie McDonald in the first round.

McDonald, a seasoned campaigner, seized the opportunity to capitalize on Sinner’s initial nerves. The American’s aggressive play and Sinner’s uncharacteristic errors culminated in a comfortable 6-2 victory in the opening set. McDonald might pull off a stunning upset against one of the tournament favorites.

However, Sinner’s resilience is a hallmark of his game. The young Italian quickly adjusted to the conditions, minimizing his errors and rediscovering his rhythm. His trademark forehand began to find its targets, and his serve regained its potency.

Powerful

The second set was a turning point. Sinner broke McDonald’s serve early on and consolidated the break with a hold to love. The momentum shifted decisively in Sinner’s favor, and he cruised to a 6-2 victory.

The third set was a masterclass in precision tennis. Sinner played a near-flawless set, committing no unforced errors and dominating the baseline exchanges. McDonald, visibly tiring, was unable to match Sinner’s intensity.

The fourth set was a formality. Sinner, buoyed by his dominant performance in the previous set, continued to apply relentless pressure. McDonald’s resistance crumbled, and Sinner wrapped up the match with a 6-2 victory.

Sinner’s victory was a testament to his mental toughness and exceptional talent. Despite facing adversity early on, he overcame the challenge and advanced to the second round. His next opponent, American Alex Michelsen, will face a formidable task trying to stop the Italian’s momentum.

Alcaraz victory

Carlos Alcaraz, the 2022 US Open champion, began with a hard-fought victory over Australian qualifier Li Tu. In a match that lasted over two hours, Alcaraz emerged victorious by a score of 6-2, 4-6, 6-3, 6-1.

The Spaniard dominated the early stages of the match, showcasing his exceptional athleticism and powerful groundstrokes. However, Li, playing in his first Grand Slam main draw, refused to go away quietly. The Australian’s aggressive serve-and-volley tactics caught Alcaraz off guard, and he dropped the second set.

Undeterred, Alcaraz regrouped and regained control of the match in the third set. His precise serving and devastating backhand proved to be too much for Li, who was unable to sustain his level of play. In the fourth set, Alcaraz dominated from start to finish, sealing his victory with a commanding 6-1 performance.

Road to championship

Despite the occasional hiccup, Alcaraz’s overall performance was impressive. His ability to adjust to different playing conditions and opponents is a testament to his maturity and skill. As the tournament progresses, Alcaraz will try to win his second title at Flushing Meadows and consolidate his status as one of the best players in the world.
