In collaboration with Manufacture de Sèvres, “L’Éloquence des Larmes” (The Eloquence of Tears) marks new territory for Claire Tabouret, who is globally recognized for her expressive pictorial portraits about the sea, youth, and identity, while she continues to experiment with ceramic vessels centered on femininity.

Recently a mother of her second child, Tabouret conceived the idea for her new exhibition during pregnancy. “The women represented by Claire Tabouret mourn the loss of a child,” wrote Château La Coste, which is also a vineyard and restaurant.

“For this series, Claire Tabouret invoked the weeping maternal figure from ancient art history. Firmly rooted in contemporary history, the crying of these women reflects an increasingly violent global context.”

On the rise

Represented by the French galleries Almine Rech and Perrotin, Tabouret has experienced a meteoric rise in the contemporary art space over the past decade. Her intimate portraits often depict solemn figures or groups of children as an exploration of the constant transformation of being.

Working with ceramics, Tabouret believes the change of medium will have a reciprocity in her painting practice. “There is a relationship with volume that makes me think of painting differently,” she previously said in an interview. “There are more and more invisible elements emerging…”

“The Eloquence of Tears” will be on display at Château La Coste until September 2024.
