Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge offers an unparalleled experience of luxury, adventure, and cultural immersion. This hidden gem, formerly off the grid, has always been a favorite for its opulent canvas tents, locally-sourced cuisine, and exceptional setting.

Under the stewardship of the Australian group Baillie Lodges, the Clayoquot experience has been further enriched. The tents have been refurbished, a new spa has been incorporated, and signature activities are now included in the price. Even more impressive is the company’s commitment to the local community and environment, as well as educating guests about the indigenous culture and heritage of the area.

From the outset, Clayoquot has embraced a regenerative approach to tourism, aiming to leave the natural environment better than they found it. In 2021, following the property’s acquisition by KSL Capital Partners, a three-year, $1.6 million renovation was initiated, overseen by Australian hoteliers James and Hayley Baillie of Baillie Lodges.

Interior design

The interiors showcase textiles and furnishings commissioned from First Nations artisans. For instance, cushions are crafted with raw wool produced on Vancouver Island and handwoven by a local textile studio. Additionally, artists like Moy Sutherland, from the Tlaoquiaht community, have created the traditional bentwood boxes and bowls.

The gastronomy is surprising, given the remote location and the resort’s commitment to Vancouver Island and British Columbia produce. Menus change daily and meals are served in the Cookhouse, which will be renovated soon.

Guests can opt for a grab-and-go smoothie and pastry or enjoy a leisurely breakfast featuring bacon and egg brioche sandwiches or a wild mushroom and goat cheese frittata. Dinner is a three-course affair that begins with an appetizer like tuna tartar with squid ink crisps. Optional wine pairings highlight Canadian producers such as McWatters Collection from the Okanagan Valley.

Clayoquot’s Healing Grounds Spa fully embraces the healing power of nature, leveraging its secluded riverside setting on the Bedwell River. The spa will see new additions in 2024, but currently offers two treatment rooms, a waterfront massage deck, an expansive terrace with a wood-fired cedar sauna, and deep cedar hot tubs.

Comfort

A yoga and meditation studio with floor-to-ceiling windows allows for tranquil views, and there’s also a fitness center equipped with state-of-the-art cardio and strength machines. Daily sunrise stretch classes, often held on the waterfront deck, are complimentary.

Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge has established an Environmental Legacy Program, privately funded by the lodge and by guests through a 3% environmental surcharge, to support sustainability initiatives. Since 2001, Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge has been working with the Department of Fisheries and Oceans Canada and the Ahousaht First Nations to improve the natural environment of the Bedwell River watershed.
