Born out of Smith’s respect for the work of Artek’s founders, Aino and Alvar Aalto, the “Artek Reimagined by Paul Smith” collection reinterprets three iconic pieces by the Finnish manufacturer: the Stool 60, the Screen 100, and the Coat Rack 109.

Each piece, crafted in Finland, retains the functionality and artisanal quality that characterize Artek, but with a distinctive touch of Sir Paul Smith’s personality.

The British designer, known for his rebellious spirit (as demonstrated by the sunrise-inspired Gufram Cactus for the reopening of his LA store) and his motto “inspiration can be found in anything”, brings a playful touch to Artek’s emblematic Stool 60.

Color and life

In a nod to his passion for cycling, Smith incorporates a cycling-inspired stripe (a hallmark of his designs, available in 40 different colors) to the birch wood frame. The color palette is pared down to just four: bold poppy colors as well as subtle, different wood stains on the seat and three legs.

An unexpected and fun detail: the underside of the seat is painted in an ultramarine blue, a recurring color in Paul Smith’s suits.

The second piece, an adaptation of the Screen 100, is constructed with narrow pine slats in different shades, creating a subtle reference to Paul Smith’s stripes. Two of the finishes are classic Artek shades, while the other three have been created especially for this collaboration. The result is an organic and understated pattern with a 70s feel.

To complete the collection, the Coat Rack 109, a classic Artek design inspired by the luggage racks of steam trains, is reinvented with the same color palette as the screen and stool. This piece combines functionality, ergonomic design and a subtle retro touch.

“Artek Reimagined by Paul Smith” launches on September 12th and will be available online at paulsmith.com and in selected Paul Smith stores.
