New Yorkers seeking a summer respite will undoubtedly find it in the brand-new “pool” at Rockefeller Center.
The Rink, that iconic esplanade which transforms from an ice rink to a roller skating rink and even hosts the 24-meter Christmas tree, reinvents itself once again to offer an urban oasis.
Although technically not a real pool, the public art installation “Pool Party” by Los Angeles-born, New York-based artist Joel Mesler will transform this emblematic space into a summer spectacle.
The work, driven by Rockefeller Center and Art Production Fund, features a “pool” made of printed vinyl with Mesler’s characteristic aquatic motif, accompanied by sculptures of beach balls and inflatable noodles.
All of this is surrounded by lush grass inviting passersby to “dip their feet” in this masterpiece that screams summer out loud. The installation is part of The Rink’s summer programming, “Summer at The Rink,” and can be enjoyed until July 21, 2024.
In addition to the artistic pool, 193 flags with positive words like “hugs,” “love,” “hope,” and “joy” will surround The Rink’s perimeter, also a work by Mesler. The artist was inspired by his fond memories of children’s pool parties to create this scene. “Presenting this work publicly at Rockefeller Center is a dream come true. I hope visitors take the time to immerse themselves in the themes of love, joy, and community in the height of summer. Come and play!” encourages Joel Mesler.
Around the complex, more vinyl images expand Mesler’s “Pool Party” narrative. But if you’re looking for a real dip to cool off from the summer heat, New York offers numerous rooftop pools and free public pools.
One of the favorites of New York City residents is the one at Highbridge Park, with two options: a shallow pool for the little ones and another with various depths for adults. Although busy in summer, their large size prevents the feeling of overcrowding.
