While single-barrel expressions remain a relatively rare find, the Cristalino category has seen a meteoric rise in popularity. However, Tequila Cayéya isn’t content with following just one trend; they’re boldly fusing both with the launch of El Diablo’s Elixir, a single-barrel cristalino tequila.

Cayéya, produced at Destiladora de Agave Azul, isn’t a stranger to limited-edition releases. Their core offerings, a reposado and añejo, are both single-barrel expressions, showcasing a commitment to unique flavor profiles.

The reposado enjoys a nine-month rest in re-charred American oak ex-whiskey barrels, while the añejo takes things a step further, aging for 15.5 months in American oak before a 2.5-month finish in French wine barrels.  These are exclusive releases, with the reposado available three times annually and the añejo just twice.

El Diablo’s Elixir, however, takes the concept to a whole new level. This one-off expression belongs to their new “Devils vs. Angels” series, and boasts the distinction of being the first-ever single-barrel cristalino from Cayéya.

Tradition

Imagine an añejo tequila meticulously aged in a trifecta of casks: six months in American oak, six months in French oak, and then returning for a final six months in American oak.

This intricate journey imbues the spirit with a complex character, ready to be unveiled. But here’s the twist – after this carefully orchestrated aging process, El Diablo’s Elixir undergoes charcoal filtration, stripping away its color and transforming it into a coveted cristalino.

The brand prides itself on authenticity, and El Diablo’s Elixir is no exception. Unlike some cristalinos that utilize additives to recapture lost flavors post-filtration, Cayéya promises a pure tequila experience.

Their blanco expression already holds the distinction of being additive-free, verified by Tequila Matchmaker, and the rest of their lineup is apparently on the path to similar certification.

After 2 years

This fiery release doesn’t stand alone.  Accompanying El Diablo’s Elixir is its angelic counterpart, The Spirit of an Angel. This single-barrel añejo spends a total of 27 months in casks, essentially serving as the unfiltered sibling to the cristalino.

Here, the agave shines through, intertwined with notes of oak, coffee, and toffee. The experience culminates in a lingering espresso finish, a testament to the extended cask aging.

The launch of El Diablo’s Elixir and The Spirit of an Angel couldn’t be more timely, considering the surge in popularity of cristalino tequilas. Brands like Codigo 1530, Mijenta, Casamigos, and Espolon have all joined the fray, each offering their own take on this clarified tequila.

Cayéya’s limited-edition duo comes presented in specially designed bottles and gift boxes, with fiery red for the Devil and a serene blue for the Angel. Both expressions retail for $150 and can be acquired directly from the brand’s website or select retailers.
