Strength and spectacle at Dior fall 2024 couture

Maria Grazia Chiuri’s latest Dior collection wasn’t just a fashion show, it was a manifesto.

Maria Grazia Chiuri, a force herself at 60, has steered Dior away from the flamboyant flourishes of past designers, translating its essence into clothes relevant to modern women. While some bemoan the loss of whimsical extravagance, Chiuri seems to possess an uncanny ability to anticipate trends.

Her intricate details – branded corset straps, kitten heels, and denim-leather boots – consistently align with the rising tides of fashion.

This show was a masterclass in effortless power. Think clean lines, strong silhouettes, and a healthy dose of athletic inspiration. Racerback bodices, square-neck gowns, and minimalist T-shirt dresses resonated with the confident presence of front-row guest Venus Williams, a testament to the collection’s ability to translate from runway to reality.

Admiration

Of course, Chiuri isn’t one to abandon the fantastical entirely. Scattered amongst the practical were moments of pure spectacle. A bodysuit shimmering with golden feathers evoked both the goddess Nike and her namesake sportswear brand.

Crystal tanks peeked through flowing chiffon, and a dramatic black cape dress, cinched with leather knots reminiscent of horsewhip handles, added a touch of theatrical flair.

The backdrop, a mosaic depicting ancient warrior athletes, wasn’t just a nod to the upcoming Olympics, but a recognition of modern women themselves: warriors conquering their daily battles.

This sentiment resonated throughout the show, a testament to the collective strength of the creative team – Chiuri, the atelier’s skilled craftspeople, stylist Elin Svahn, makeup artist Peter Philips, and hair guru Guido Palau.

Diversity

However, the lack of diversity on the runway, particularly in terms of body type and age, didn’t go unnoticed.

The irony wasn’t lost on anyone, considering the front row boasted a stunning array of powerful women across generations – Jennifer Lopez at 54, Rosamund Pike at 45, Venus Williams still a force at 44, and music stars Yseult, Jisoo, and Doja Cat, all beacons of individuality.

Perhaps, then, it was this very discrepancy that made Chiuri’s final bow so inspiring. There she stood, 60 years young, in a cool black suit and white sneakers, adorned with a cascade of gold necklaces – a picture of effortless confidence and accomplishment. A woman who works tirelessly, creates coveted pieces, and simply exudes the joy of doing what she does best.
