After his successful debut with a soundtrack (“Joy (Unspeakable)”) that transcended the runway and landed in an Evian commercial, and a Western-themed fall collection that mirrored the release of Beyoncé’s “Cowboy Carter” (which he co-wrote and she proudly sported Vuitton at the Grammys), Pharrell Williams takes center stage at Paris Men’s Fashion Week with a collection inspired by the upcoming Olympic Games.

LVMH, Louis Vuitton’s parent company and a major partner for the Olympics, sets the stage. LVMH’s sponsorship of several French athletes who also happen to be Vuitton ambassadors adds another layer of intrigue.

Humanity

Guests like Colman Domingo, Jackson Wang, and Sabrina Carpenter gather at UNESCO headquarters, a sea of country flags representing the international spirit of the Games.  But as models strut around an orb positioned on a lawn adorned with the iconic Vuitton checkerboard pattern, it becomes clear that this show is about more than just athletic prowess.

Williams’ vision extends beyond a literal celebration of sport.  Instead, he presents a cosmopolitan narrative with a focus on various global archetypes.  The “Diplomat” is embodied in sharp, 70s-inspired tailoring rendered in sophisticated black tones.

The “Explorer” is outfitted in sturdy yet chic outerwear like utility jackets and vests, ready to conquer any terrain.  And the “Dandy” makes a flamboyant statement with jackets and coats dripping in dazzling rhinestone and pearl embroidery.

Despite the message of unity, a touch of unapologetic luxury pervades the collection.  Fur jackets, crystal-embroidered coats, a pearl-trimmed pajama suit, and a fully bedazzled Carryall are just a few of the showstopping looks that graced the runway, accompanied by a live orchestra.

Summer of sport

Subtle nods to the upcoming sporting event are woven throughout.  Leather or sequin-embroidered jerseys evoke the energy of competition, while a soccer ball-shaped bag and a soccer shoe with Williams’ signature footprint sole offer playful winks to the Games.

The timing of the launch is no coincidence, strategically aligning with the UEFA European Championship and leading directly into the Paris 2024 Games, which kick off just two weeks later.

Pharrell Williams, the undisputed master of creating cultural tapestries, once again delivers a stunning collection.  This Louis Vuitton Men’s show serves as a powerful reminder of the global spirit of the Olympics, celebrating not just athletic achievement but also the diverse characters and luxurious experiences that make up our world.
