Azimut Yachts, a company established by Paolo Vitelli in 1969 and renowned for catering to the affluent, sought a design-focused model that would harmonize humans with nature, prompting them to collaborate with Matteo Thun and Antonio Rodriguez.

The design studio Matteo Thun & Antonio Rodriguez, founded in 2003, is known for its conscious design philosophy, which it has applied to various projects, from hardwood flooring for Listone Giordano to saunas for Klafs.

Rodriguez stated that the hybrid motor yacht was envisioned with families in mind, featuring clean lines, soothing colors, and sustainable materials like cork in place of the more commonly used teak.

Cork was chosen not only for its environmental benefits but also because it is a traditional Mediterranean material that regenerates naturally, embodying the essence of returning to nature.

Bridging nature and luxury

The studio teamed up with yacht designer Alberto Mancini, who developed an innovative concept where the yacht’s exterior and interior interact seamlessly from the initial sketches. One of the standout features is the “Fun Island,” a suspended deck designed to bring occupants closer to the water, enhancing their connection with nature.

Today, over half of Azimut’s fleet consists of low-emission yachts, reducing CO2 emissions by 20 to 30 percent. The Seadeck 6 is equipped with an advanced system that allows for zero emissions while anchored and cruising without the generator, significantly reducing onboard energy consumption.

This system, known as Mild Hybrid Zero Emission Hotel Mode, operates on a 42-kWh lithium battery pack and an alternator connected to one of the yacht’s three engines.

Design meets sustainability

Overall, this vessel achieves a 40 percent reduction in CO2 emissions annually compared to a traditional flybridge yacht of similar size. Azimut Yachts claims to have invested two decades in research and development focused on sustainable innovation, aligning with the International Maritime Organization’s goal of reducing industry-wide CO2 emissions by 40 percent by 2030.

In recent years, the convergence of design and nautical worlds has reached unprecedented levels. For instance, in 2019, the acclaimed designer Patricia Urquiola brought her distinctive touch to the Sanlorenzo SD96, incorporating elements such as a modernist metallic winding staircase, a biscuit-patterned parquet floor, and sleek modular furnishings.

Azimut Yachts, part of the Azimut|Benetti Group, designs motor yachts ranging from 42 to 125 feet in length and is based in Avigliana, near Turin. The company reported total revenues of 1.3 billion euros in 2023 and is recognized as the world’s leading manufacturer of yachts over 24 meters.
