MB&F, renowned for its groundbreaking timepieces, unveils the LM Sequential Flyback.

This limited edition (33 pieces) platinum masterpiece represents the evolution of Stephen McDonnell’s ingenious chronograph design.

McDonnell, known for defying conventions, didn’t settle for “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it.” Instead, he has enhanced the award-winning LM Sequential EVO with a flyback function, further elevating its functionality.

The LM Sequential EVO, launched in 2022, marked a significant milestone for MB&F as their first chronograph. McDonnell’s unconventional approach focused on utility, creating a chronograph movement that excelled in various timing scenarios.

This resulted in a complex movement with two column-wheel chronograph mechanisms and the revolutionary Twinverter switch, offering a staggering four timing modes.

The LM Sequential Flyback introduces the flyback function, a pilot-centric innovation from the 1930s. This eliminates the need for the time-consuming stop, reset, and restart sequence of a standard chronograph, crucial for pilots to avoid navigational errors.

The flyback simplifies this process with a single press to stop, reset, and restart the chronograph. It’s interesting to note that McDonnell’s initial LM Sequential EVO prototype included a flyback function, but it was put on hold for further development.

After two years of rigorous testing, the flyback function finally takes flight in the LM Sequential Flyback, offering a total of five timing modes.

Classic Legacy Machine Design Meets Modern Functionality

While the dial layout remains unchanged from the LM Sequential EVO, the LM Sequential Flyback adopts the more classical Legacy Machine case design.

The 44mm platinum case features a polished finish with brushed flanks, longer screwed lugs, and engraved “FLYBACK” inscriptions on the lower pushers.

The water resistance is reduced to 30 meters compared to the EVO’s 80 meters.

The LM Sequential Flyback boasts a fully integrated dual chronograph flyback movement with manual winding.

This intricate mechanism now boasts 619 components compared to the EVO’s 585. Despite the increased complexity, it retains the 3Hz frequency and 3-day power reserve thanks to its double mainspring.

The movement is beautifully finished with contrasting dark bridges and polished bevels, showcasing the dedication to watchmaking artistry.

A Testament to Innovation and Precision

McDonnell’s ingenuity is evident in the use of patented jewelled vertical clutches, minimizing friction and ensuring the flyback function operates seamlessly.

A special jewelled roller further enhances the flyback mechanism, making the LM Sequential Flyback a marvel of both power efficiency and precision timekeeping.
