The timing couldn’t be more fitting, coinciding with Euro 2024 held on home soil – a chance to celebrate the nation’s rich soccer history.

German sneaker boutique Overkill is about to release a special edition Adidas ZX8000, and it’s more than just a new shoe. However, a shadow of uncertainty hangs over this collaboration.

With Adidas losing sponsorship of the German national team to Nike in 2025, this ZX8000 could be a bittersweet “swan song” – a final hurrah for the long-standing partnership between Adidas and the DFB (German Football Association).

The upcoming sponsorship switch is a sore spot for many German fans, including Overkill co-owner Marc Leuschner. A hardcore soccer fanatic with a history of creating ZX collaborations, Leuschner admits they were planning the shoe long before the sponsorship news broke.

A new beginning

This highlights the historic bond between Adidas and German football, a partnership that for many fans is woven into the very fabric of the sport.

“For Germans,” Leuschner reflects, “this change feels strange. It’s as if Adidas has always been a part of the national team’s identity. It’s hard to imagine anything else.”

This realization may have even affected the production schedule. The design process was shorter than usual, with only one sample created. Leuschner speculates that the looming sponsorship shift might have accelerated things, potentially making this the last Adidas shoe to sport Germany’s iconic colors.

This unique situation adds a layer of intrigue to the release. The ZX8000 boasts a classic white base with bold black, red, and yellow stripes – a design that evokes both the German kits and the footwear choices of legendary players like Jurgen Klinsmann. It wouldn’t be out of place on the training ground or amongst the passionate “ultras” cheering on the team.

Official release

The online raffle for these German-themed ZX8000s kicks off on June 6th. If you miss your chance online, an in-store release follows on June 8th in Berlin and Cologne. Whether it’s a final farewell or a nostalgic celebration, this collaboration is sure to resonate with German soccer fans and sneaker enthusiasts alike. It’s a chance to own a piece of history, a reminder of the golden era of Adidas and the German national team.

More importantly, it’s a testament to the enduring passion for soccer in Germany. Even as sponsors change, the love for the sport and its iconic teams remains a constant. This ZX8000, a perfect blend of classic design and national pride, captures that very essence.
