From chairs and tables to screens and lamps, each piece in Ishigami’s series reflects the architect’s philosophy and design language. Lightness, a fundamental element in Ishigami’s architecture, is also present in these furnishings. Through understated materials such as leather, rattan, wood, glass, and steel, he evokes an interplay of delicacy, simplicity, and elegance.

Despite the apparent hardness and rawness associated with some of these materials, Ishigami has reimagined them in a fresh and airy manner.

Through the use of slender lines manipulated into rigid structures and subtle corrugations, Ishigami creates an experiential conversation between the furniture and its surroundings.

A Milanese Debut

The low Zaisu chair and glass table in this series were originally conceptualized for Ishigami’s cave house and restaurant in the city of Ube.

On the other hand, the screens, the workshop table, along with the other tables and chairs, are designed for the “House”, a project currently under construction that will function as Ishigami’s mother’s home.

Junya Ishigami’s new furniture series can be seen as part of the Alcova selection in Milan, as highlighted in our roundup of Milan Design Week must-sees.
