The artist

Yayoi Kusama is a living legend in the contemporary art world. Born in 1929 in Japan, she began creating art from a young age, often depicting hallucinations and using polka dots – a motif that would become her signature. Though she trained in traditional Japanese painting, Kusama found herself drawn to the abstract expressionism movement emerging in the West.

Kusama’s work explores themes of infinity, obsession, and the self. Her polka dots can be seen as a way of dissolving the boundaries of the ego and creating a sense of oneness with the universe. Despite facing challenges due to her gender and nationality, Kusama persevered and gained recognition for her unique and powerful artistic vision.
