Telling stories through design

with

Nicole Nomsa Moyo

Nicole Nomsa Moyo uses architecture as a tool to give back to communities, creating spaces that reflect both human and ecological needs. Raised in South Africa and based in Toronto, Canada, the Zimbabwean-born designer has a holistic vision that has been recognized by numerous publications and biennales, and her MBA thesis, Ukubutha, has even been presented at the Design Indaba conference and UN Habitat.

“Problem-solving has always been a passion of mine. While some people approach them with numbers or formulas, I’ve always expressed my solutions through design, as it’s the medium I understand and communicate in most naturally. Growing up in South Africa, I was fortunate to be surrounded by mentors, my dear parents, and schooling that recognized and nurtured this passion. This early support shaped my desire to use design as a way. Architecture became my tool for addressing real-world challenges, and I’m driven by the opportunity to tell stories through design that integrate cultural heritage, sustainability, form and function into everything I do,” explained.

I hope that viewers leave (Pearl Jam) with a sense of empowerment, recognizing their own stories reflected in the art and feeling a connection to the cultural expressions represented in Pearl Jam”.

Installation

  • Nicole was recognized with the Miami Design District’s Annual Design Commission in 2024. So, she created an art installation, entitled Pearl Jam.

“Pearl Jam is an offering of self-discovery through cultural expression. It draws inspiration from the women in the Southern African Ndebele culture, who are like prized pearls, artistically expressing themselves through their jewelry, clothing, and architecture,” said. “The “jam” represents my reimagining of how I connect space and time to express a new form of cultural art and evolution in a global context.”

Collaboration

  • “By bridging the handcrafted elements with contemporary design, Pearl Jam not only honors their heritage but also serves as a continuation of cultural practices, providing a platform for their voices to shine and resonate in the modern world. This project embodies the beauty of collaboration, showcasing how the artistry of these women contributes to a vibrant narrative that connects the past with the present”, explained.

Holistic

  • “Effective design can address social issues, improve quality of life, and create a sense of belonging.”

    • “By integrating cultural narratives and community needs into the design process, we can create environments that promote inclusivity and reflect diverse perspectives.”

  • “When approached holistically, architecture and design can inspire positive change, elevate human experiences, and contribute to a more equitable and vibrant world.”
