As the 2025 Formula 1 season reaches its dramatic climax, with Max Verstappen, Lando Norris, and Oscar Piastri locked in a three-way title battle heading into the Abu Dhabi finale, the paddock’s attention is already shifting toward the future. The countdown to 2026 has begun, and Scuderia Ferrari is making its ambitions clear: the iconic Italian team is not just preparing for the next season—it is redefining its approach to reclaim championship glory.

Project 678, Ferrari’s groundbreaking chassis for 2026, embodies this forward-thinking strategy. With the sport on the brink of its most significant technical overhaul in years—featuring hybrid power units split nearly 50:50 between combustion and electric energy, and the introduction of active aerodynamics—Ferrari has taken decisive action. By successfully passing the FIA’s mandatory crash tests ahead of schedule, the team has freed up valuable resources, signaling a relentless focus on innovation and performance.

This early commitment underscores Ferrari’s determination to turn the page on recent near-misses and position itself as the benchmark for the new era. As the current campaign delivers edge-of-the-seat drama, Project 678 stands as a testament to Ferrari’s resolve: the fight for 2025 may still be undecided, but the battle for 2026 has already begun.

Early Strategic Shift

Team principal Frédéric Vasseur confirmed that Ferrari switched its focus to the 2026 project as early as April 2025, after McLaren’s dominant start to the season.

While this decision meant sacrificing aerodynamic upgrades on the SF-25, it allowed Ferrari to dedicate wind-tunnel time and engineering resources to the new car.

Both Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton were involved in the decision, underscoring the team’s unified commitment to long-term success.

Technical Milestones

Ferrari’s new chassis, provisionally named Project 678, has already passed the FIA crash test at the CSI facility in Bollate, Italy.

This milestone ensures homologation for the upcoming season and reflects the team’s readiness for testing in Barcelona in late January 2026. Designed under the leadership of technical director Loïc Serra, the car embodies Ferrari’s vision of blending safety, innovation, and performance.

Drivers and Team Dynamics

The 2026 season will mark the second year of the Leclerc-Hamilton partnership, a pairing that combines youthful ambition with veteran experience. Their involvement in shaping the car’s development highlights Ferrari’s collaborative approach, ensuring that driver feedback is integrated into engineering decisions.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 regulations promise to reshape Formula 1, and Ferrari’s proactive strategy positions the team as a contender in this new era. By investing early, passing critical safety milestones, and leveraging the talents of Leclerc and Hamilton, Ferrari aims to deliver a car capable of challenging for victories and championships.

As Formula 1 prepares for its most significant transformation in years, Ferrari stands ready. The team’s early commitment, technical achievements, and driver synergy suggest that 2026 could mark the beginning of a new chapter in Ferrari’s storied legacy. More than just a car, the project represents Ferrari’s determination to adapt, innovate, and lead in the sport’s future.
